Man of action. 3 fitness tips for health after 40.
Aug 26, 2025
Men of action. We think. We plan. We act. How often do we reflect? As I hit the milestone of 40, I reflect on my 25 years of fitness(yes I started exercising at 15). It began with a weight bench in my room and floor space for pushups. It has evolved into a full fledged facility occupying half of my 2 car garage. Strongman log, 500+lbs of plates, pullup rig, unicycle, and much more. I am proud of my progress. As I move past 40, I believe it's time for a change in perspective. This change is the product of failed goals, failed joints, and failure to do it right. An intelligent shift in my fitness perspective will create the progress I want for the next 20 years. Below I will highlight 3 fitness tips for men’s fitness after 40.
3 tips for men’s health after 40.
- Train stability over strength.
- Eat for health not size.
- Aches and pains. Get over it.
Train stability over strength.
If you are like me, you have been exercising for aesthetics, strength, and function. This is a young man's approach. We know most men reach their physical peak in their mid 20’s-late 30’s. Hence why we did it right to train hard until 40. Guess what? We have earned a bit of respite. I am not saying stop training hard. I am saying train just as hard and redistribute your training time. This redistribution will allow for more rest(which men need). It will allow for better recovery. When we get back to the gym, it will help create efficiency. Efficiency means strength. Yes, I am telling you less strength training is more. I am also telling you more stability training is more strength. As a cherry on top, more strength and stability means less risk of injury. I had to drop that nugget in there! We are more prone to injury as a fit man at 40. Stand up. Pick up a leg. Hold it for 30 seconds. Repeat often!
Eat for health not size.
It may sound like blaspheme, but, “You ain't no spring chicken”. Putting on size is not impossible, but also not important. Most of us have regular lives. It requires us to fit into regular clothes, regular seats, and even regular size cars. So… why are you eating like a pro bodybuilder? Will it help you play with your child? Will it help you have healthy joints? Will it keep you moving until 100? No it won’t. Eating for health will. Nutritious food improves brain function, improves hormone health, and improves auto-immune health. We know muscle gain is hard after 40. Eating nutrient dense foods will help boost the systems that will boost your muscle growth. A fit man at 40 is required to eat for nutrition.
Aches and pains. Get over it and fix it.
Ah. Aches and pains. If I got to punch every dude who complained about aches and pains, I would have no friends with teeth. We wear it like it's a badge of honor. We might as well be bragging about shooting our own foot off. Your aches and pains came from your neglect of your body. Every ache is a reminder. Every pain is a memory of a time you trained harder not smarter. Get over it. This article is a change of perspective. You will hurt. When you hurt, do something about it. I recommend my Online Mobility Course for Men. Not only will mobility training decrease your pain, it will also give you something to do instead of complaining!
