I remember when my Dad turned 40. My Mom celebrated with black balloons, cardboard coffins, and a black cake. The point. Dad turned 40.. He is already dead. I believe this mentality applies to most men’s fitness at 40. It seems to be in the coffin. The black balloons holding the last nail from closing the lid. I could go into a pep talk, but f3(% that. You will either do or you will not do. This article is aimed at your mindset. If you want to build an acceptable body, starting with your mindset might be the way. Let’s get to the 3 mental changes men need to make at 40 to be fit.

  1. Accept your aesthetics.
  2. Challenge your fitness.
  3. Love your Physique

  1. Accept your aesthetics.

This is not a call to accept your fat gut. It’s a call for men to accept their body. Most of us don’t like what we see. The truth. We are only going to get uglier. Hell, I have wrinkles on my ass cheeks! What happened to something as smooth as a baby's bottom?! Age brings wrinkles, loose skin, and muscles that are not quite as plump as we would like. This is a wonderful process. At 40, men’s hair is greying or disappearing. Tight skin, and muscles are just a little bit more loose and soft. Hell yeah. These are healthy signs of aging for men. You have earned the badge of age. The hair on your head whether it be a beard or moptop. You have earned the soft muscles. You don’t need to be so hard. Be proud of your ability to accomplish twice as much with half the effort. This is called wisdom. An aging man is confident in his body. A 40 year old man ages with strength and dignity. A 40 year old man knows how to accept his body. Check out this article for 33 ways to boost your confidence.

  1. Challenge your fitness.

The 25 minute 5k. Not a lofty goal, but a simple one. A goal I have only failed at once, by 1 second. I set this goal at 25. I will maintain this goal until I cannot physically do it anymore. This challenge serves me as a guide to my minimum fitness level, as well as a constant goal to beat by as many minutes as I can. The truth at the moment is I cannot run. I have not been able to run for 19 months. I sustained a back injury that does not allow impact yet. As I heal, I will work toward my 25 minute 5k goal. Your challenge may be a tough workout. Or completing a full yoga class. Set a new fitness challenge for yourself and execute it. Check out this article on why men should challenge their fitness at 40. Constantly challenging your fitness will build durability and strength for aging men. It will keep your body resilient. It will build your mental capacity for more difficult challenges. It will make you more of a man.

  1. Love your physique

I do not mean love the shape of your physique. I mean love the muscles that build your physique. Love them for how they function. Love them for the skills they allow you to be good at. DO NOT hold them accountable for their weaknesses. I have long legs, and long arms. This means I am great at running, throwing, and lifting odd objects. These are physical feats that require leverage. I have long bones. I am not quite so adept at heavy lifting, gymnastics, or functional fitness. My levers and muscles are just too long to be efficient. When men love their physique, men can build a healthy body using the muscles they have. Check out this article on muscle fiber type training. Understanding what you are naturally good at goes a long way to fitness success. The biggest battle men fight is themselves. Learning how to love our physique at 40, provides men with sustainable confidence in their fitness lifestyle.

Let's put the re-Cap on!

  1. Accept your aesthetics.
  2. Challenge your fitness.
  3. Love your Physique

In conclusion, men tend to neglect the mental aspect of fitness. When we accept this as truth, we can accept the truth of our existence. We can accept our body, challenge ourselves with intelligence, and love the sizzling stack of man steak we are. If you are struggling to with the mental aspect of fitness, I can build you a personalized men’s fitness plan. Your body is custom. So must your training be.
