What is the point? I am not sure. You have to decide this for yourself. I have my points for staying fit. I am not going to bullshit you now with a bunch of facts and crappy reasons you can find everywhere else. I am going to give you 3 realities of men's fitness at 40. I am also going to offer 3 tools I use to stay fit at 40. These tools will express my point. Pay attention. Before we get to the details, I will tell you my “why” behind this article. I messed my back up to a point where I have to perform rehabilitation work almost daily. I do all of this work just to live with an “acceptable” level of pain. What is wrong with my back? 9 vertebrae are out of alignment. Some bulged. Others herniated. One torn. It doesn’t really matter. It is for your FYI. Now let me get to the good stuff. Why should men over 40 exercise? 3 realities of men's exercise at 40.

  1. Constant problems to solve.
  2. It is our toughest battle.
  3. Our body weakens anyway.

Constant problems to solve.

At this tenure of our lives, we are surrounded by problems. The biggest one being our physical presence. It can hinder or help us. And it is constantly deteriorating. So… What is the point of exercising? My point. It is something for me to do. Yeah. Not very inspirational. I am not here to inspire. Go here for inspiration. Life becomes boring. It is a part of growing old. It is up to us to find joy. When it comes to our bodies, we are either behind it or ahead of it. We can wait until we are too fat to put on our shoes, or we can exercise, and stay flexible. Either way, we have a problem to solve. We might as well choose the problem. Your tool: The Power to Choose.

It is our toughest battle.

As the previous paragraph pointed out, we should choose our problems. A battle is being waged inside of us daily. Need rules to battle with? A mind of youthfulness and a body of…. Well… Not youthfulness. Whether you show up to fight for your body or not ,the fight is happening. And we all will lose. Yes. I am speaking of death. So.. I offer you an exercise of spirit. No bullshit. Just something innate in every man. The Spirit of Competition. Who are we competing against? The Old Man (A.K.A. DEATH). Why are we competing? To keep him out. To piss him off. We die in spite of all that we do to live. We might as well spite death by making him fight for us. We will die, but we will not die without a fight. The battle will rage, but it will rage on our terms. On a field of our choosing. Your tool: The Spirit of Competition.

Our body weakens anyway.

I'll open with the metaphor of a knife blade. To be useful, it must be kept sharp. Sharpness requires honing. Honing removes metal. The blade reduces in size, and weight over the years of use. This is the existence of man. This is the ultimate truth. We are born useful, sharp, and full of strength. Years of use, and honing reduces us. We cannot lift as much. Run as fast. Move as far. It actually starts in our 30’s. This does not mean we are no longer useful. A sword honed into a dagger is simply a piece of metal whose use has evolved. This is why I exercise. To reinvent myself. To remain dangerous. No longer do I need to attack from a distance. Now I can wait until my edge is useful. Until the opportunity is in front of me. Ripe for harvesting. Our bodies will become small. Our muscles will become weak. Our presence however, can remain strong. Your tool: The evolution of your Body.

  1. Constant problems to solve.
  2. It is our toughest battle.
  3. Our body weakens anyway.

I hope this article achieves its point. It is to point out the losing battle we GET to fight each day. We do not need fanfare or honorable reasons to take care of ourselves. They can simply be realities of life that drive us. A simple choice of making life work hard to bring on The Old Man. I for one do not need praise, redemption, acceptance, or any of that modern day bullshit. I just need to wake up everyday, and enjoy the fight. This is my way of accepting 3 realities of men's fitness after 40. My point?  I choose the spirit of evolution.
