The lone wolf. The beast in the corner. Hoodie pulled up. Headphones blasting deathmetal. A hollow gaze of sheer grit and determination for every rep. Quite an image. You may even imagine this to be you. Maybe it is. Most likely it is not. Before we are men, we are humans. Humans desire interaction with other humans. However, some of us truly are lone wolves, and do not need as much interaction as others. If this sounds like you, listen up. We are the lone wolves who are looking for the middle. We do not need a large pack. We simply need a small group of men to work hard, grunt loud, and listen to rock n roll! In comes small group fitness. 1.Like minded motivation
I love my wife. I truly do. When I compete, she is loud and proud. But her motivations are not mine. I am motivated to stay as strong as I can. I am driven to be as useful as I can be. I am driven to be a formidable physical force until the day I die. She cannot understand my “why”. Other men can. Meeting 2-3 times a week with a group of like minded men, allows a judgment free zone for men to work hard, challenge themselves, and test themselves against other men. This social feedback is crucial for male development, and relationships. Team sports are built around this concept. Men’s support groups as well. Exercising with other men 40+ is for the men who work silently. Work hard, and work for a reason larger than themselves.
2. Real Accountability.
We have all heard the saying, “The loudest dog won’t bite”. I believe this to be true. We have all met the man who has done it all. Oddly, you never see them actually doing anything. We are not that man. We are the men who set goals. We show up to exercise the repetition required to achieve our goal. We do not bark whether we fail or achieve our goal. We are here for real accountability. Progress. Progress will not be seen in the group session. IT will be seen in the in between. When you are alone making decisions you think no one will see. Progress will show up as a new PR. A goal met. A new goal set. Our men's small group will be watching, and helping. Suffering alongside as we build the men we are meant to be.
3. Action Jackson.
As we work hard among this group of men, we are building a crucial skill. Action. Taking action on our hopes, and dreams is scary. Good. Action creates progress. Building the skill of action among other men, allows for dialogue in this space. While the work is hard, jokes are tossed around. Jabs are landed. All with the intent of sharing the difficulty of the action. It is within this dialogue, men can relieve mental stress with the simple Action of doing.

What this whole article boils down to is a simple understanding of men and community. The idea of a man I believe in was built in the shadows. A man who works for his health so he may provide his family with wealth. Small group men's fitness classes bring this man out of the shadow and into the light. Into a space where other men can lift him up with community, and fitness. A true space for men's fitness to be built.
