Recovering from an injury is no fun. Recovering from knee surgery wins the day. We all know physical therapy for knee recovery is important. What do we do after our 6-8 weeks of PT? The answer is simple. We keep doing the exercises from physical therapy. I will outline 3 reasons we need to do physical therapy for knee injuries far beyond the recovery phase.

  1. Joint health progress
  2. Knee longevity
  3. Strength maintenance.

I'll dive into detail for you!

  1. Progressive joint health

Physical therapy for knee recovery is designed to restore the knee joint to its previous state of health. Great. What if I want it to be stronger? This is where the continued rehab exercises can bring your knee to a whole new level of strong. Recovery is not just about getting back. It is about moving forward. Creating a new concept of knee strength that will progress your knee continuously. Check out this knee conditioning program for post rehabilitation continuation.

  1. Knee longevity.

Let me touch on another aspect of recovery. Some of us would like to continue to challenge our physiology as we age. Being healthy is not enough. We want elevated levels of fitness. If we are going to ask this from a recovering knee, we must take care of said knee. Continuing knee rehabilitation exercises weekly can increase the life of your knee and still allow us to challenge our physiology. Check out this article on recovery as we age.

  1. Strength maintenance.

Protein synthesis slows down as we age. This means we take longer to recover and build new muscle tissue. This does not mean we have to stop. It means we do not need to invest as much into the muscle building process. Instead, we should invest our time in continuing knee rehabilitation post surgery. As our muscle building time slows, we can use the time to continue to build up our knee strength. This will allow us to be more efficient with use of the muscle we have. We can potentially get stronger while getting stronger! Every ounce of strength counts. Check out this article on muscle recovery.

Let's reiterate 3 reasons to continue knee physical therapy long after surgery.

  1. Joint health progress
  2. Knee longevity
  3. Strength maintenance.

In conclusion, it is ultimately up to you. Level of input equals output. If you have gone through knee surgery, you know how limiting it can be. Continuing your knee rehabilitation exercises can mitigate the chances of you hindering yourself again. Strength, and longevity of the knee creates a long happy life.
