Exercise is fun, beneficial, and communal. I believe it is necessary for humans. As we approach 40, aches and pains show up. Joints tend to sound like kids cereal. Our mobility and our flexibility disappear. The good news is we can restore flexibility and mobility on our bodies. Yes! 40 does not mean you have to slow down. Check out this article from the CDC!

I am fast approaching 40. As a fitness coach, I have been helping individuals just like you stay fit well into their 40’s and beyond. Personally, I feel the aches and pains as well. I competed in various disciplines for 18 years. Every rep, every step has added up to joint pain, back pain, and just being alive pain! Fortunately, my experience coaching and competing has provided 4 of my favorite tips to avoid joint pain!

Let’s get to the 4 Tips

  1. Hydrate
  2. Eat Anti-inflammatory
  3. Exercise Quality over Quantity
  4. Stretch and mobilize DAILY!

Hydration

We are 60+% water. Water moves through our cells. Water moves through our muscles. Water is everywhere. So…. Why are we not paying attention to this simple, and important metric? A recent study published in the Annals of nutrition and metabolism found, mild dehydration worsens mood. Dehydrated exercise can add to this mood deterioration. The major question at hand is how much? I choose to follow this basic formula. Consume 80% of your bodyweight in oz of water. Example: I weigh 190 lbs. 80% of my body weight is 152 lbs. Therefore I consume 150 oz of water a day. My nutrition app supports and reflects in my data. It is time for you to act. What is 80% of your bw? Find the number. Set a goal. Start tracking!

Eat Anti-inflammatory

Inflammation is the death of healthy joints. Aches and pains are influenced by inflammation. Hence the importance of consuming foods heavy in anti-inflammatory properties. This article from the Mayo Clinic provides insight into an anti-inflammatory diet. My personal regimen involves daily doses of peppers, healthy oils, ginger, cinnamon, and a fruit and veggie power drink! Interested in a nutrition review? Exercise Quality over Quantity

Going big or going home is a thing of the past. As we age, we must grow our intelligence towards fitness. Muscle memory is a real thing. It DOES become easier to stay healthy. ONLY if we alter our approach. You do not have to stop lifting heavy. You do not have to stop working hard. When you exercise, let quality dictate your pace. Leave the ego at the door and show up for you. I have 9 injured vertebrae. I could spend all day on weights I used to lift. I won’t. It is not important. What is important is showing up ,and exercising with quality. If you want to stay fit until your last day, start exercising with quality today. Not sure what quality exercise looks like? Stretch and Mobilize Daily

No excuses. You have the time. Daily stretching and mobility greases the joints. Working the muscles moves fluids full of nutrition through our body while flushing out toxins. This process restores muscles, and prevents injury. If you want to exercise until you die, you MUST stretch and mobilize daily. I spend 20 dedicated minutes on stretching and mobility. When I do not, my injuries take over and limit my exercise ability. I really have no choice. For daily mobility and flexibility videos, subscribe to my Online Courses. No, you will not lose muscle.
