We are men now. We were men then. We are civilized now. We were primal then. Are you a primal man? Can you move like the predators that roam this earth? Can you understand the power that resides in your primal body? If you can’t, Functional Flow(animal movement) is your next training program. Men’s exercise plans need to be different. We are different. We think differently. We feel different. So why not follow a different exercise program for men? I am not saying women cannot utilize this style of exercise. I am saying, men benefit greatly from this program. Check out the article from the NY Times on Animal Movements. Out of the many benefits such as body control, and strength gains, there are 3 specific benefits that stand out to me.

What are these 3 benefits for men's exercise programs?

  1. Connective Tissue length
  2. Connective Tissue Strength
  3. Energy transfer through connective tissue.

Enough said. Let’s get to the details.

  1. Functional Flow movements are based on many different ways skeletal structures can move. A snake moves differently than a lion who moves differently from an elephant, etc, etc. What allows the skeletal structures to move is our connective tissue. Length in our connective tissue allows us to move well. Check out this article from The National Library of Medicine. Functional Flow exercise challenges our range of motion. Over time, our range of motion increases creating length in our connective tissue. This length allows for safe, efficient movement as well as aids in injury prevention. Most importantly, it is MANLY! It is PRIMAL! It is the history of men rolled into an exercise program. Before we were civilized, we had to learn our predators to become their predators. 1. My 2nd reason for loving Functional Flow exercises for men is simple. Strength! How many times have you seen a bulbous muscly guy get the shit beat out of him by a wiry guy. If you haven't, google it. The majority of the time, the win goes to the little guy. Muscles are not connective tissue. They can be strong through specific movement patterns, but weak outside of said patterns. This limited range of motion prevents strength transfer, potentially reducing total output. Check out this article on Range of Motion. A smaller individual with more range of motion, can potentially match the strength output of a muscle bound man. Of course, a real men's exercise program would incorporate both to maximize the strength and length available. Click HERE for a personalized men's exercise program.

  1. I have already touched on my final reason for loving Functional Flow. Energy transfer! I am a big strong guy. A few of my credentials are 600 lbs deadlift, 505 lbs squat, 265 lbs strict log press, etc. I am strong. I am also long! I can touch my toes, perform splits, and do a backbend(google it if you need to).Check out my IG account. You can find a few of these feats there. How can I achieve movements on far ends of the range of motion spectrum? Functional flow. As I mentioned in point 2, strength is fairly useless without length. Functional flow builds Strength. In point 1, I mentioned Functional flow builds length. When strength can move through maximal length, we get efficient energy transfer. Efficient energy transfer equates to more power. Why be strong if we are inefficient? Why be long if we are weak? Functional flow builds the foundation of length and strength which creates power via efficient energy transfer? Check out Anatoly for a great example of efficient strength transfer! For virtual exercise videos for men, click HERE.

Let’s recap!

  1. Functional flow movements create length in connective tissue.
  2. Functional flow movements create strength in connective tissue.
  3. Functional flow movements create efficient energy transfer(power) through connective tissue.

In conclusion, a well rounded exercise plan for men will include strength training, length training, and efficiency training. Functional flow can provide all 3 dependent upon your end goals. Functional flow can also be incorporated into other training styles. Bodybuilding, powerlifting, Olympic lifting, and more can benefit from Functional flow.
