You thought hiring a trainer would melt the pounds away. You thought he would wave his magic barbell and all your struggles would disappear. You. Thought. Wrong. In this article, I will address the 3 reasons online personal trainers should fire you or refuse to work with you. Do not take the following points personally. If you heed the caution, you will save yourself time and money. Hiring a virtual trainer requires a minimum level of diligence, honesty, and integrity. No matter how you spin it. Results are found with those 3 concepts aligned. Now it's time to take a look at the cold hard truth!
Three reasons your online personal trainer should fire you!
- Inadequate time management.
- Bullshit metrics.
- ZERO self-accountability
Let the dust settle on the truth bombs. If you are alive, you are guilty of all 3. I am subject to this as well. Open up to a bit of self awareness. Let’s open the can of worms.
- Inadequate time management.
The easiest metric to track. Seriously. 24 hrs in every day. 60 minutes per hour. 60 seconds per minute. It pretty much tracks itself. Yet, there is not enough time on the day. That is a lie. There is plenty of time. You are choosing to be frivolous with it. Control of your time would be set hours for a set task each day. Exercise being a set task. If you are not exercising on a regular, repeating schedule currently, you are helpless. There is a small chance you will get your shit together. Statistically, you won't. - Modified metrics
A modified metric is one embellished to receive positive feedback. Example: Starting 4 workouts complete when only 2 were complete. “Forgetting” to log that brownie so your nutrition metrics align. Self deception is almost impossible to spot. Metrics highlight deception with ease. The amount of data we have on humans' response to physical stimuli is astounding. Unfortunately for you, this means I know when you are lying even if you don't know you are. Check out this article on self deception. It will not be apparent at first, but it will rear its ugly head. Weight does magically show up overnight. Strength PR’s aren't missed from bad programming. 98% of the time, results are never found due to a substandard supply of metrics. The proof is in the pudding. I will know if you are tasting it. If you cannot be honest with yourself, your virtual coach should fire you!
- Self accountability is a solid ZERO.
Virtual fitness trainers are not in your presence ever. We see you through a screen, and communicate through a message bubble. We rely on your self accountability to be honest. We understand the struggle. It is why we are here to help. We have overcome this struggle to some degree in order to teach others. Unfortunately, this is a non-negotiable. You are left alone to collect the requested metrics, perform the written programming, and report back with 100% honesty. Can you do it? Seriously think about this. If you cannot, you are not ready for help from a personal trainer. Perhaps another realm of science can help you. When you begin to hold yourself accountable, you are ready for help. We have data out the wazoo to help us help clients. When you can subjectively collect data on yourself, there is no limit to the goals you can achieve with a virtual personal trainer.
